Human Trafficking - Modern Slavery

Caitlyn Paul —

Did you know that there are more slaves today than at any other time in human history. Today there are over 40 million slaves worldwide and a new person becomes a slave somewhere in the world every 4 seconds.

Last Thursday, Matt Friedman in conjunction with Hagar (a NZ organisation who helps trafficked people) came to talk to a number of year 12, 11 and 10 students. He spoke about Human trafficking/Modern slavery. His speech was very informative and helped many students to learn more about a subject which is not often talked about. It was interesting to see what we can do as individuals in our own lives to help those involved in modern slavery, such as buying products from companies with a human trafficking policy, to avoid participating in the chain which excuses such behaviour. It is easy to turn a blind eye to the issue, but Matt helped us to see that if we ignore this issue and pretend that it isn’t our problem, the problem will only escalate and become much worse. Matt’s speech was very inspirational, and we thoroughly enjoyed having him visit to speak to us, and we all learned something new from him.
