River Quest River Clean Up

Jason Aaron —

On Thursday 6th May a group of 25 students and staff undertook the first CGHS River Quest river clean up. This event was part of the Mother of All Cleans Ups organised by the Avon Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust.

The students spent 2 hours in and around the Ōtākaro Avon River gathering rubbish from the stream banks and from the riverbed itself. The rubbish was sorted into various categories and the data gathered. This was entered into an online database, to allow for analysis of the types of rubbish that was found around our school.

This will lead to conversations and strategies about how we can reduce the amount of litter that enters the Ōtākaro Avon River at the CGHS site.

A huge thank you goes out to the Avon Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust and EOS Ecology for organising and supporting the River Quest clean up. Thanks also to Mr Lewis, Mrs Passchier, Mr Woyak and Miss Lamont for helping the students on the day of the River Quest.

We hope this will turn into an annual event, and that we collect significantly less litter in 2022!
