Recommendations For Travelling To School

CGHS Publication —

Travelling by bike:

Students who bike to school down Fendalton Road using the cycle lane are advised to proceed to the end of Fendalton Road and cross at the pedestrian crossing. They should then walk their bike along the footpath beside Deans Avenue to Matai Street. It is highly recommended that students do not attempt a right-hand turn from Fendalton Road on to Deans Avenue. The bike stands are located in the fenced compound by the entrance to Mona Vale. Students need to lock their bikes within the compound. The bike compound is locked during school hours and unlocked at all other times.

On leaving school students should travel in the reverse direction using the footpath as before. It is against the City Council by-laws for cycle traffic to use Mona Vale on the homeward route.

Students who come from the east down Harper Avenue are advised to enter onto the Hagley Park cycleway and then cross Deans Avenue by the 'Uni-cycle' dedicated cyclist crossing.

There are pedestrian and cycle crossings which ensure a safe crossing at Matai Street as well as Fendalton Road and Kilmarnock Street. Students are encouraged to use them.

We advise not to leave your bicycle in the lockup at school overnight.

High visibility gear is actively encouraged to be worn by students, especially cycling, to and from school. And remember, it is mandatory under NZ law for all cyclists to wear helmets.

Travelling by car:

Matai Street has a cycleway which students are encouraged to use. It is also a "slow road" for safety reasons. It can become very congested with buses and parents' cars at the close of the school day. Parents are requested not to block the exits to the school drive and not to park on the grassed areas or the cycleway. There are no parking spaces for parents' cars on the school grounds. It is recommended that parents arrange to pick up their daughters in nearby streets.

Travelling by bus:

A Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora bus will leave the Bus Exchange at approximately 8.20am daily and will drop students in Matai Street in time for class.

Two buses leave the school at the end of the day from the Mona Vale area and return the students to the Exchange.

Note:

Students are NOT to wear school cardigans while walking to and from school, or on the bus.
