New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball Championships

Millie Hassall —

Through the success of our Senior A Netball team at SISS, placing second, this earned them a spot at Nationals.

During the second week of the school holidays, the team flew up to Wellington and headed to Porirua, where the tournament was held. Sixteen teams qualified for Nationals, 6 from the Upper North Island, 5 from Lower North Island and 5 from the South Island.

Four pools were made up consisting of 4 teams, each match hard fought. Our girls first game was up against Trident High School, first game nerves seemed to get the best of us coming away with a loss, however, our girls brushed this off and prepared for their second game of the day against Hastings High school. A much better battle was put up from our side with year 10 Stella Crossan getting her debut for the A team.  Unfortunately, it was not meant to be, coming away with another loss.

The following day came and after recovering through ice-baths and nutritious meals our girls were feeling ready for their third game against St Kentigern College. Proving to be a top side our team came away with yet another loss, which placed us in the bottom eight, along with three other South Island teams. St Margaret's College and Columba College, from Dunedin, fought their way into the top eight. Last game of the day was our familiar rival STAC, having beaten them a few weeks earlier at SISS, our girls were up for the hard challenge, but STAC came out firing from the get-go, pulling away and taking the win.

Third day rolled around and two more games were yet to be played, although our girls were getting sore muscles and starting to fatigue, they continued to work hard in both these games against Manakura and St Hilda’s. Unfortunately our girls were not successful in either games, meaning they would play off for 15th and 16th, against Napier Girls’ High School,

With it being our Year 13s last ever time to represent Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora, everyone put their absolute all into it and the girls came away with a solid win 44-33, placing them 15th in New Zealand.

The strong St Margarets' College side had earned themselves a spot in the National finals so our girls made banners and bought pom poms to go and cheer these girls on. Coming away with second place, it was great to see a South Island team do so well.

A big congratulations to our girls for achieving so well this season, and we wish all the best to our Year 13s and their futures in netball.
