South Island Badminton Cup Success
Over the past weekend, on 25 and 26 June, the Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora A badminton team participated in the South Island Secondary School Badminton Cup which was held at Badminton Hall in Christchurch.
Team members were:
Angel Ni, Kelly Shen, Charmaine Phua and Sofia Li
Over the weekend the team played James Hargest College, Riccarton High School, Rolleston College and Burnside High School in a round robin competition.
Leading into the final match, Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora had won against Rolleston, Burnside and Riccarton. James Hargest, last year’s winners had won all their matches too. So, the last match with these two teams playing each other was considered the final.
It was great to witness the spirit of the game at the start of the final. Both teams lined up and introduced each team member and then wished each other good luck; then the matches began!
Our team started with a loss in the 3 / 4 doubles, but then won the 1 / 2 doubles, and then 3 of the singles matches. Excitement was building as the number 1 singles match took place and it looked like Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora were going to win. Kelly Shen, our top ranked play, dominated the match and our team became South Island Girls Champions for 2022.
Well done to all teams members and a big thank you to Christina Wang, the manager, who supported our team throughout the weekend.
