Rowing 2021
CGHS Rowing had an incredible season right from the start. We had one of our biggest squads ever, with 63 girls joining/continuing rowing.
With the majority of the squad missing out on the 2020 Maadi Cup due to COVID-19, everyone trained hard over the winter season and came back stronger and determined to have a successful season. The squad were fully committed, training six days a week, racing at five regattas and attending three training camps, helping us reach our peak, to perform well at the 2021 Aon Maadi Cup Regatta. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we could not race at the South Island Secondary Schools Regatta, which meant that, unfortunately, the girls who weren’t going to Maadi, missed out on their last big regatta for the season.
Thirty-seven girls from CGHS went to the 2021 Aon Maadi Cup Regatta at Lake Karapiro. We finished with two gold medals in the U18 pair and the U18 4+. We made CGHS rowing history by winning the Dawn Cup for the first time! We won silver coming 2nd in the U18 8+,and bronze coming 3rd in the U15 8+. It was an excellent regatta, with every rower making an A, B or C final, which is a huge accomplishment.
From their achievements at Maadi and their hard work throughout the season, Katie Gardner received a U18 South Island trial where she narrowly missed out on a place in the 8.
Emily Bowden and Orla Fitzgerald were successful in making the U19 New Zealand Junior team!
Overall, 2020/2021 was an incredible season for the whole CGHS Rowing Squad, where everyone’s hard work, dedication and team spirit made 2020/2021 a successful season.Sophie Chapman - Rowing Sports Leader
