Readers Cup In-house Competition 2020

CGHS Publication —

This Thursday we had the in-house event for the Readers Cup competition in the library at lunch time.

The Readers Cup competition is a yearly regional competition open to year 9 students. Readers Cup encourages deep reading in a world where the printed word is fast becoming another disposable commodity that can be churned through and discarded. The contestants in R.C. must engage with their prescribed books in a way that perhaps seems alien to them in much of their reading outside of the competition: they have to study them, and go a bit beyond what would be expected for their English classes. They have to know the smaller details of the story, spotting the things that only the author would usually notice. They have to live within the novels, not just consume them.

This year we had 3 teams enter into our in-house competition – The Victors, M.M.E.H and The Couch Potatoes. The girls all had to read 5 short stores each and then answer 5 questions each per story per team – 25 questions in total.

It was a close competition but at the end of the day M.M.E.H emerged victorious. They will have to read six books now in preparation for the regional final to be held a Turanga on August the 12th.
