CGHS Rowing Success

Catherine McDermott —

Over the holidays Katie Gardner, Orla Fitzgerald and Emily Bowden competed in various rowing trials.

Katie narrowly missed out on the South Island U18 team that competed against a selected North Island team but for an U16 to get a trial this was a fantastic achievement.

Orla and Emily were up at Lake Karapiro last week trialing for the New Zealand Juniors. Orla has been named as a reserve for the NZ Junior Double and Emily Bowden has been named in the NZ Junior Coxless Four.

An absolutely awesome effort by all three.

We held our End of Season Prize Giving Dinner last night with 130 attending.

The awards for the 2020 - 21 season:

  • Most Outstanding Novice - Millie White
  • Best Attitude - Katie Gardner
  • Values Award - Sophie Chapman

  • Most Successful Crew - U18 Coxed Four (Emily Bowden, Orla Fitzgerald, Katie Gardner, Piper Spencer, coxen Skye Duncan)

We were lucky enough to purchase a new eight at the end of last year. While the New Zealand Women's rowing team were down training for a week at Kerrs Reach we were fortunate to have them attend the naming of the new eight. It is named Spoors after Phoebe and Lucy Spoors who attended CGHS and are in the Women's team;

It was a drizzly day so we had to crowd in the rowing shed but all the NZ team came to support.
