Year 11 Māori - Cultural experience at Te Puna Wānaka

Sophie Smith —

Last Monday both of our year 11 Te Reo Māori classes went on a trip to Te Puna Wānaka at Ara to experience the Mihi Whakatau (welcome) process in Maori culture and learn more about the workings of a Marae.

We were one of six schools that were lucky enough to go on the trip. We were encouraged to participate in different steps of the Mihi Whakatau such as singing a Waiata (song) and saying a Karakia (prayer), which also allowed us to receive credits.

There were three rotations that we participated in, that all taught us different aspects of being at the Marae. It was such a great experience to be able to work with students from other schools and have the opportunity to do it in Ara’s wharenui.

I enjoyed learning the origins of different karakia and when it is appropriate to use them. We also had the opportunity to play games that incorporated different vocab to help us grasp a better understanding of simple Māori phrases. It was also very cool to learn that women play a huge role in the Māori culture. That the wahine are prized and appreciated as they are seen as sacred and are powerful within the culture. This definitely empowered our students as wahine Māori to be proud of who they are.

This was definitely one of the best school trips I have ever been on and it has given me a new appreciation for the Maori language and culture.
