CGHS Sport Term 1
Sport has come to an unfortunate early end for Term 1 and the summer season.
This week events, tournaments and competitions have been cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19. Click here for an update for Sport Cancellations. Many of our athletes who have been training hard for tournament week, which was to take place at the end of next week, were bitterly disappointed when learning they were not able to demonstrate their skills and travel to their respective events.
Wednesday sports have also finished for many although a few lucky ones are still progressing, fencing and climbing among them.
Free morning Fitness classes are happening on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the gym at 7.30am. Come along for fun sessions available to all age groups.
A running group meets every Tuesday morning at 7:30am in the gym to go for a run in Hagley Park. All age groups and staff welcome!
This term it has been great to see so many of our students taking part in sport, be it in the Wednesday inter-secondary competitions (bowls, indoor netball, futsal, touch, tennis, water polo, climbing, ultimate frisbee, mountain biking), plus volleyball, rowing, cricket, aerobics, dragon boating, sevens, polo, archery and fencing. We had great participation at both our athletics and swimming sports; these students did not get to the chance to compete at the Canterbury Champs, unfortunately.
Below are photos from two sports which have made a comeback at CGHS after a few years’ absences – dragon boating and ultimate frisbee. The dragon boat squad took part in a five-week training programme run by Aoraki Dragons and then competed in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Regatta on Sunday 8th March. The ultimate frisbee team competed in a Wednesday schools’ competition held in Hagley Park.
At this stage we are all hoping that winter sports are to proceed as usual; watch this space!
