Year 9 Social Studies

Tusi Reupena and Elise Taula —

Taonga Hunt and Waka, Ōtakaro experiences.

The Taonga Hunt

This week several Year 9 Social Studies classes went into town for a Taonga Hunt. Our class went around the central city in small groups of 5 with 2 or 3 peer support leaders. We had to find answers about the history of Christchurch, including Te Ao Māori, using the Goosechase App. We walked around the Museum, the Art Gallery, Riverside Market, Gardens and the Library, just to name a few. Exploring around Ōtautahi Christchurch involved a lot of teamwork and communication with our Tuakana and peers. This was a really good way to show our values outside of school. The key part of the day for us was appreciating one another and these wonderful and amazing stories from the past.

Waka on Avon

The second part of the day we went on a waka on the Avon River. Going on the waka and learning lots of interesting facts was a highlight of our day. We had loads of fun but most importantly we all learned something new. Not only did we enjoy our trip and learnt how to show our School Values, but we also communicated and got to know one another better. My favourite part was when we had a race with the other team using our mahi to win against each other. We just couldn’t stop saying how exciting it was for our class. It was a good time to spend quality time with friends without the blue light of your phones shining on your face all the time. The other Year 9 classes will have an opportunity to go on this experience in Term 3.
