NZQA Update

CGHS Publication —

As senior students go on study leave for school examinations, we would like to remind you of the importance of these examinations, as they help to inform the judgement for derived grades (or unexpected event derived grades).

This year, the unexpected event derived grade could come into play if there is disruption to the sitting of the actual examinations (due to things such as a further lockdown) at the time of the externals at the end of the year. This means that students should aim for their very best results in their Prelim examinations as external grades might become final, confirmed grades for NCEA.

The last day at school for students in Years 11 – 13 will be Thursday 11 November as they begin study leave for the NCEA External Examinations.

Students will be given a copy of the External NCEA Examination timetable for 2021 which can also be accessed online:  https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/assets/qualifications-and-standards/qualifications/ncea/exams-and-portfolios/examination-timetable.pdf

Derived Grade Applications 2021

A derived grade may be awarded to a student who:

  • Is unable to sit examinations or submit materials for external assessment, or

  • Who considers that their performance in an external assessment has been impaired by exceptional circumstances beyond their control. This includes a natural disaster, the death of a family member or close acquaintance, and national representative duties which have prevented them from sitting examinations or otherwise presenting materials for external assessment.

A grade awarded by the school, based on standard-specific evidence, is submitted to NZQA for processing.

A derived grade is NOT available for Scholarship.

  • Derived Grade applications must be made through the Principal's Nominee.

  • Candidates should contact the Principal's Nominee (Sonja Bailey) as soon as possible if an application is likely.

  • Candidates must collect or download an application form before consulting a medical practitioner. Applications cannot be processed without the correct documentation and a medical certificate may not be sufficient as it may not cover all requirements.

  • Derived Grades for portfolios for Design and Visual Communication, Technology or Level 3 Visual Arts must be returned to the Principal's Nominee by 1 November 2021.

  • External Examination Derived Grade application forms must be returned to the Principal's Nominee by Friday 10 December.

Admission Slips

At the end of October all students will be given their admission slips. These are extremely important as students will not be allowed to enter examinations without this slip. We always have students that forget, so please make sure that as either you or they leave the house to remind them to take their admission slip.

Advanced Notice of Access for Students Leaving School at the End of the Year re Their Google and School Material

If you are leaving school at the end of the year, students are reminded to check the email address that is used for logging onto your NZQA account. If you are using a school email address, this will need to be updated to a personal email account as school email accounts will be deactivated on Wednesday 15 December.

This is also a reminder for leavers to remove any material that is saved on their google or school drive as there will not be access to any saved material after this date.

Please contact Mrs Sonja Bailey at school via email bls@cghs.school.nz or phone if you have any questions.
