International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT 2019)

Mrs Kathryn Coakley, HOD Chemistry —

Chemistry Week, 29 April – 3 May, celebrates the Periodic Table and the Chemistry Department have organised several great competitions for the students.

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT 2019). This coincides with the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Periodic System by Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleev in 1869. Chemical Elements play a vital role in our daily lives and are crucial for humankind and our planet, and for industry. The development of the Periodic Table of the Elements is one of the most significant achievements in science.

The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements will coincide with the centenary of IUPAC. IUPAC, along with IUPAP confirms the discovery of new elements and gives them their official names.

Chemistry Week, 29 April – 3 May, celebrates the Periodic Table and the Chemistry Department have organised several great competitions for the students. They can enter to win exclusive Periodic Table badges, keyrings and earrings and 'I love Chemistry' badges!
