How We Survive: A Feminist Poetry Show

Katrina Dyne, HoLA English —

On Tuesday, students and staff were treated to a lunchtime performance called "How We Survive: A Feminist Poetry Show" by internationally acclaimed poets Carrie Rudzinski and Olivia Hall. After the show, a number of students took part in a poetry writing workshop in which Carrie and Olivia inspired them to create their own poetry.

This poem was written by Year 9 student Emily May during the writing workshop.

I was afraid but that wasn't why my knees shook, why my hands shook, why my face was hot and my mind tangled. That was because there was too much inside me, way too much, over maximum capacity. I was biting my nails and fingers stumbling over everything as my sister turned mildly confused at my state.I was a trembling hurricane colliding with an earthquake. I wasn't afraid of what she would think.I knew she wasn't going to laugh but I was afraid to admit to someone other than myself that this thing that had me by the throat was only biting harder.I put her into a position I shouldn't have.I should've said, "Sorry, I need to borrow your bravery for a little bit. I won't keep it forever. It's just that mine is all used up."
