Fencing Success

Sera Cox —

Last weekend the Mid-South Regional Secondary Schools Fencing Championships were hosted here, in the Christchurch Girls High School/Te Kura o Hine Waiora gym.

There were some outstanding performances from all the girls. Sera Cox won gold in the girl’s épée, Ilona MacLachlan won bronze, Sophia Falta came seventh and Millie Sarjeant came ninth. Sophia also took gold in the girl’s novice foil event, and silver went to Kate Bennett.

The girls also put up a good fight in the teams matches, with Sera and Ilona combining with St Margaret’s College to come third equal in the mixed épée teams matches against some stiff competition from Burnside and Christ’s College. Sophia and Kate formed a team with Rangi Ruru Girls School and, after two close matches, came fourth in the mixed foil teams event.
