Message from our Principal

Helen Armstrong —

Tēnā koutou katoa parents, caregivers and whānau

Over the past few weeks, we have had a focus on whanaungtanga, by connecting as a community. Thank you to all those who have been involved in organising the numerous activities and events. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to bring these to fruition.

The Year 9 Parents Evening was hosted by the PTA, our Pasifika Fono was led by our Year 11 Dean, Angelene Sisifa, and our Whānau Hui was organised by Whaea Adrienne.  These gatherings provided an insight into the year ahead, as well as an opportunity to connect with other parents and to meet some of our staff.

Acland House has also focused on building connections across the boarding community and this week they held their annual Carnival Night with Adams House. Thank you to Christchurch Boys' High School for hosting this fun-packed evening.

Continuing with the theme of connection, our Prefects organised a shared lunch on Monday and introduced themselves to me. It was so lovely to gain an insight into who they are, learn about their interests, and to see the passion they have for their school.

We also celebrated leadership across the school at the Assembly on Wednesday, reminding students that they can develop their leadership abilities across the school in so many ways. I shared this whakatauki, which speaks to the importance of working together and acknowledging teamwork.

Mā mua ka kite a muri,

mā muri ka ora a mua

Those who lead give sight to those who follow,

those who follow give life to those who lead.

Badges were presented to students leading specific extracurricular activities including sports and performing arts codes. We look forward to working alongside all our students as they grow their leadership skills and contribute to our community.

Celebrating student achievement is always a pleasure, and it is extra special when students have the opportunity to represent the school. Last week, Aline Taylor joined me at the SPACPAC, Canterbury Pacific Youth Awards to support two of our students who were nominated for awards.  Kelera Qalivutu was nominated for Sports Achievement and Isabella Fainga'anuku for Mana Leadership.

This is an event held to recognise top Pasifika students across Ōtautahi who have demonstrated academic ability, leadership and contributed to the cultural and community life of the school.  I hope that you were able to attend the AKO Conferences today. These are an important part of our journey together, in supporting student learning, developing student agency and building home-school partnerships.

Wishing you all the best for the weekend.

Ngā mihi nui
