Tēnā koutou katoa parents, caregivers and whānau

Christine O’Neill —

Thursday marked the official beginning of spring and it lifts us all seeing sunnier days, warmer temperatures and lighter mornings.

I understand the government is soon to be reviewing settings and I know we all look forward to summer and hopefully more normality in our covid settings. It has been fantastic seeing our students participating in all their sport and cultural finals over the last few weeks.

The girls have performed exceedingly well this season right across every sport and in music and choir. Our sports teams are currently right across the country at Winter Tournament and we look forward to those results. You can read about these successes in the newsletter. What is also lovely is that invariably our students not only perform highly but are commended for a great attitude, collegiality and respect alongside grace in success. They demonstrate our school values in action each and every game or performance. Thank you to all our coaches, managers and supporting parents who instil these in them.

There was an interesting article in Stuff recently highlighting key events which have occurred in our history in Spring.  This included:

1893: Women's suffrage day, New Zealand was the first self-governing country to grant women the right to vote.

1919: Women can stand for Parliament, the Women’s Parliamentary Rights Act enabled women to stand for election, 26 years after they won the right to vote.

1933: First woman MP elected, Labour Party’s Elizabeth McCombs became the first female MP.

1936: Jean Batten reaches Auckland, landing at Mangere after an 11-day solo flight from Britain.

1942: Women Jurors Act, women allowed to sit on juries.

1975: Whina Cooper led land march to Parliament.

Spring has been good for women!
