On Monday 25 June Atithi Chamoli, Treasa Glubb, Mary O’Leary and Heli Pate, accompanied by Jason Aaron and Sarah O’Leary, travelled down to Otago University to compete in the 2018 BrainBee Neuroscience competition.

On the night before the competition the students were fortunate enough to visit the W.D Trotter Anatomy Museum and spend time looking at brain cells using a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM).

The team was well-rested on Tuesday morning and greeted by sleet and cold rain on their short walk to the competition venue at Otago University. Schools from around the South Island were competing in the final competition to find an individual and teams winner.  The individual winner would win the right to travel to Australia and represent New Zealand in Oceania area international competition.

 The girls competed in individual quiz rounds and a teams competition. Atithi, Mary and Treasa all won their way through to the individual final, along with 5 other students from around the South Island. The girls answered a series of questions in front of all the other competitors. A nervous wait followed for the final results. When the results were read out Atithi finished a very close second place to a student from Nelson College for Girls, and the CGHS team also finished in the runners up spot. This was the most successful effort from CGHS in a number of years, and a great effort from a small team.
