History / Hītori - Level 1

History is the attempt to explain the past, and to understand the ways that past events influence our present.

Qualification: NCEA Level 1

Entry requirements: None.

Content/Skills

Introduction to historical thinking and concepts- We will begin the year with a overview of the big ideas and concepts in the study of History. Ākonga will examine Classical Greek, Roman and Māori myths, comparing and contrasting the two different worlds. We will also examine WW2 and its significance to New Zealand.

Parihaka 1881- Ākonga will also learn about what happened at Parihaka on November 5 1881 - Te Rā o te Pahua - Day of Plunder. We will examine the causes of this significant event, the enduring significance of the invasion and explore how it is remembered today. 

Black Civil Rights in the USA - Our next main topic for the year is an in-depth focus on Black Civil Rights in the USA during the 20th Century. Ākonga will examine the origins of the Black Civil Rights movement and the key people and groups involved in the protests of the 1950s and 1960s in the USA. 

Skills learned by History ākonga are: effective and fluent communication, thinking critically about historical sources, and understanding historical perspectives. 

History in Y11 is an exciting and interesting course. There is time to think about the topics and content and develop proper understanding.

2 Internal Achievement Standards worth 10 Credits

1 External Achievement Standards worth 5 Credits
