Eco-Action

CGHS Publication —

At the end of last term, we were given 1000 little New Zealand native plants to be potted up into larger pots which in a year's time will be planted in the Red Zone.

This is a part of a large ongoing project called Eco-Action and our school is one of the many in Christchurch participating. These plants are planted in the hopes of bringing birdlife back into the city whilst also giving students an opportunity to actually do something about climate change and improving sustainability.

We started off this year with a few weeding sessions. This was to prepare the plants that we potted up last year to be taken away and readied for the large community plantings. Shortly after there was a swap over where we got our new plants.

Potting these up is no small task and last Friday a group of students stayed after school to help, all earning some service hours in the process. A large portion had already been done by Social Studies and Geography classes in Term one as a part of their studies on climate change and sustainability. Getting to help with this project is highly rewarding and we welcome any new students to come to our next after school potting up next Friday the 27th near the tennis courts.

We highly encourage everyone to bring their friends and family along to the community plantings, first of which will be happening at the QEll site by the intersection of Frosts Road and Beach Road on the 29th of May between 10am-12pm.
