Rugby 2019

Craig Thornhill —

2019 has been the most successful year for Girls' High Rugby ever. CGHS won the UC Cup for the fifth consecutive year and were unbeaten all year.

The long-term success of rugby has seen our player numbers grow and we nearly managed to field a 2nd XV in the UC Cup, with many of our development girls getting valuable game time playing for Riccarton High School. Our target this year was to win the South Island final and qualify for the Top Four Nationals. In 2018 and 2017 we were beaten by Southland Girls and we were looking forward to pitting ourselves against them, but instead we faced St Hilda's in the South Island Final. Our girls were very nervous going into this game but quickly settled into the game and played some of the best, most intense and ruthless rugby of the year. We won 71-21, and shifted our sights to the Top Four, travelling to Palmerston North, and the intensity of the Top Four Nationals, with Sky TV broadcasting the games! It has been awesome to see the performance of some of our Old Girls - with Grace Brooker capped for the Black Ferns, Martha Lolohea a regular star for Canterbury and Rosie Kelly leading the overall scoring in the FPC!Our first game at Nationals was Onehunga High School. We really didn't know what to expect in this game, which was played in some very wet conditions. Our girls stuck to the game plan, spread the ball wide and soon the Onehunga team began to tire. The end of the game reflected our dominance 57-7. Having won the semi, the girls had a day off and could focus on playing the National Final against reigning champions Hamilton Girls' High, broadcast live on Sky TV, complete with pre and post game interviews for Charlotte and Alice! Hamilton are a big, tough team and they played very well. We played well too, and the final score didn't really reflect the quality of the game and how well our girls played. Despite losing the final, our girls were all extremely proud of the growth in the team and the way the team came together. We have some great players in this team and everything bodes well for 2020.
