Academic Assembly and Bickerton-Widdowson Scholarships 2023

CGHS —

The final assembly for Term 1 2023, saw the return of our Academic Assembly.

Thank you to all of our parents and whānau that joined us at the recent Academic assembly. We appreciate your support at these events and it was great to have you back with us on site.

In 2022, Christchurch Girls’ High School / Te Kura O Hine Waiora again saw an outstanding number of young woman achieve Academic Merit and Colours based on their achievement at Level 1 and Level 2 NCEA.

The last 3 years of disruptions have not been easy on learning and we recognise this, and bearing in mind all of these disruptions, would like to acknowledge the resilience, hard work and grit that shone through that allowed all of our students to achieve their personal best.

As part of this assembly we also announced the 2022 Year 13 students recipients of the Bickerton-Widdowson award, which recognises high achievement at NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand Scholarship. The award comes from the Bickerton-Widdowson Trust which is administered by Christchurch schools and stipulates that the students must also be enrolled at Canterbury University.

This year’s winners of the award and the Degrees that the students have decided to pursue at Canterbury University are:

  • Gabriella Eastgate – who is studying towards a Bachelor of Engineering
  • Molly Newman – who is studying towards a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Astronomy and minoring in German
  • Toni Philpot – who is also studying towards her first year of engineering
  • Lucy Walton – who is studying towards a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Communications with a major in Journalism

This year we were also able to congratulate Hope Anderson-Gardner who was awarded the Lodge of Endeavour award, which is for a student, intending to undertake tertiary study at the University of Canterbury, who has conducted research into an historical event or place of significance to New Zealanders.

Hope chose to investigate the extent to which the intent of Waitangi Day has been realised since it became a national public holiday (by law) in 1974.

Hope’s choice of topic was sparked by her interest in Matariki becoming a public holiday in 2022 and the recognition of the significance of Matariki to Māori.

The school would like to congratulate all students who achieved an award on their success.
