Basketball Teams South Island Tournament

CGHS Publication —

Our Senior A basketball team consisting of 12 players, 2 coaches, Sam Jenkins and Courtney Godinet, as well as their team manager and a teacher travelled to Invercargill for their South Island Secondary Schools AA Basketball tournament, which was held at ILT Stadium.

The first two games in pool play were both successes, first against fellow Christchurch team Avonside, where the team won 70 - 54, and then against Craighead who the team beat 74 - 48. This meant they finished the first day of play at the top of their pool and made top eight.

The next day they crossed over and played Rangiora in their quarterfinal, and after a tight first three quarters the score was pretty even with only a few points in it, but however, Rangiora pulled away in the fourth quarter and unfortunately Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora lost 48 - 68.

The following day this meant the girls had a must win game against Cashmere High School, who they had previously lost to by ten points in the Whelan quarter final, so it was going to be a tough game.

Sadly Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora lost 52 - 60, which meant they weren’t in contention for top six. As well, contention for 2022 Secondary School Basketball Nationals was dashed, so on the final day of play, playing off for 7th and 8th, the team was playing Middleton Grange who were another quite familiar Christchurch team and  Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora took the dub 59 - 44. It was the final game for the team’s three year 13’s Eva, Jade and Tia, who have been with the team for 4-5 years.

Although 7th wasn’t the result the girls were quite hoping for, it was still a wonderful tournament, many memories were made and the team had a great time.
