Psychology/ Mātai Hinengaro Level 3
Psychology is the study of behaviour and associated biological, cognitive, and social processes. Studying Psychology explores how the brain works, and looks into theories to gain an understanding of behaviour in individuals and groups.
Entry requirements:
Students need to have passed at least two of the following Level 2 Psychology standards AS 91844 (Approaches), 91847 (Fields) or 91846 (Research). All entry, including alternative entry is at the discretion of the TIC.
Topics:
Analyse the interaction between psychological approaches
This topic involves critiquing how different psychological approaches interact with each other to help understand the causes and treatment of schizophrenia.
Conduct independent psychological research with consultation
This topic requires students to design, carry out and report on their own psychological research topic such as the halo effect, music and cognitive performance, multi-tasking and cognitive performance.
Analyse how theories are applied within a field of psychological practise
This topic focuses on the field of Developmental Psychology and examines theories of infant attachment by exploring the importance of the first two years of a child's life. Case studies include the NICU unit at Christchurch hospital, various child care settings and the NZ prison service.
Analyse a significant issue in psychological practice
This external topic involves critiquing how a significant issue is evident in psychological practice. Examples may include contexts such as gender bias, cultural bias and the use of children and animals in psychological research.
Assessment:
This UE approved course offers a total of 19 credits and involves three assessments that are internally assessed (Worked on in class and at home) and one externally assessed. These credits can provide 16 UE Reading credits and 3 UE Reading or Writing credits.
Careers:
The study of Psychology can lead to working in a wide range of fields such as clinical, forensic, research, educational, sport performance, organisational and developmental.
