Charities Committee

Mila Inder and Julia Welsh —

This has been an incredibly busy year for the Charities Committee, with large fundraisers happening every term. It started off with a bang, with our newly formed committee volunteering at the annual Christchurch Children’s Day and Sanitarium WeetBix Tryathlon.

This was a great start to our year with a particular focus on giving our time towards the wider community. Nearing the end of Term 1, we embraced the tradition of supporting both Brackenridge and Cholmondeley with an Easter mufti fundraiser, raising over $1000. Since then we have seen the school’s effort has paying off with Brackenridge purchasing a much needed defibrillator. Over the holiday break we had groups of dedicated committee members who sold poppies for the RSA. Another group went to the City Mission and volunteered their time, which inspired a can drive that was held later in the school term.

Our school charity for the year was Youthline, a New Zealand youth development organisation, and over Term 2 we volunteered as bucket collectors. This, alongside other fundraisers that we held throughout the year, meant that we raised over $2500 for this well-deserving charity. In Term 3 we also sent a group of girls to help clean the Ronald McDonald house. Daffodil Day also occurred during Term 3, which meant that many girls from our committee helped to sell daffodils around the school. Term 4 led us to help fundraise for the Breast Cancer Foundation on the annual Pink Day.

We also organised a Giving Tree to be held whilst the seniors were on exam leave, under which students could leave gifts that were in turn given to the less fortunate. Throughout the year, we also helped to lead Year 9 form classes in charity projects that ranged from helping the SPCA to retirement homes. This has been an unbelievable and rewarding year for charities at CGHS.
