Badminton 2020

Ednicaleen Balderas —

This year has been challenging due to the pandemic that the world experienced.

However, despite what happened this year, Christchurch Girls’ High School still had a very successful badminton season during Term 2 and Term 3. We hosted a number of schools from all over Christchurch each Wednesday after school, which gave us a good opportunity to compete against other schools and to improve our own skills. There were a total of 11 teams with some notable achievements.

Our CGHS A team came 2nd overall in the Girls A grade. Our CGHS 10 Purple ranked 1st in their division and so they are going to enter the South Island Junior secondary school cup from the 24th - 25th of November.

We also held our annual CGHS Badminton Championship Tournament this year with both junior and senior competitors. There were some great matches. The senior singles was won by Ednicaleen Balderas and the junior singles was won by Anna Smith. Sadly, there were no Doubles Championship this year but I hope there will be next year. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who participated in the Championship Tournament this year. You all played very well.

A massive thank you to all the badminton players for the effort you have put in. I am happy and honoured to have served as your Badminton sports leader for the past two years. I have played with great CGHS players both new and returning and I was very impressed with the progress all teams and players made, particularly those who are new to Badminton, a strategic and fast game.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Ang, , who was always there and organised each week’s games, and was Badminton’s biggest supporter. Thank you as well to the teachers who took us to our games every Wednesday after school despite their busy schedules.

I hope everyone who played Badminton enjoyed this year’s season as much as I did. I’m sure it will be another fabulous year for CGHS badminton in 2021.
