Junior Theatresports Success

Abigail Rainey —

The Junior Theatresports Team performed with courage, style and flair in the recent final of the Court Theatre Competition.

The team made the junior final for the first time in over a decade which was an incredible achievement, for our team of Kate Bennett, Bee Sutcliffe, Lucy Dawson, Apollo Ferry, Savreet Malhi and Erin Darton. Throughout the competition, the team have consistently demonstrated our school values, especially Rangatiratanga.

This was particularly evident in the choice round where they selected a new and challenging game:  Troubadour. This game required the team to recreate a traditional sung ballad, acting out the story as it unfolds.  Special mention must go to Apollo Ferry who become our troubadour complete with harmonica, weaving a tale of gardening, frogs and the power of working together. This scene was a crowd favourite and demonstrated everything wonderful about this team: their energy, risk-taking and creativity.

All the performers should feel very proud of the scenes and characters they created from convincing experts on Doritos, to volcano abseilers, to skiing rivals and their petrified students. You entertained, enlightened, and engaged us all!

As always, the competition was fierce throughout. Unfortunately, Christchurch South Karamata Intermediate had the edge overall and were awarded first place, with Christchurch Girls’ High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora a close second by ½ point. Our team may not have won on the night but, as a group, they were the very definition of success.
