Kapa Haka 2019

School Kapa Haka

The school kapa haka group in 2019 has grown in number and strength. The group was made up of approximately 40 students and was led by a wonderful cohort of year 13 leaders. Thanks, in particular to Shyloh,Trilly and Olivia for being such positive and nurturing leaders.

The kapa haka group has contributed to many school occasions this year such as the school pōwhiri and prizegiving. One highlight of the year was the Manu Kōrero regional Māori speech competitions where we supported our two speakers. This is always a wonderful opportunity to take the stage to show our speakers how much we appreciate their efforts, but also to watch students from all over Canterbury and the West Coast performing waiata and haka.

Another highlight this year was the pōwhiri for our new Principal. The group was honored to have a major role to play in what was a very moving and emotional occasion.

Two of our most dedicated students later joined a competitive group to perform at the South Island secondary schools’ regional competitions in Term 3. Yasmin Sadlier and Amiria Tikao performed with grace and mana and they will use their expertise to lead the kapa haka group in 2020.

Our year ended with our two major farewell moments. Firstly, our Whānau and Pasfika farewell and then the Senior Prizegiving. This is where we relished the opportunity to thank our senior kapa haka girls for their service to our group. So, to all of Year 13 girls we say farewell and all the best for the future. Rere kau ana te puna o mihi ki a koutou. Whāia ngā tapuwae o ngā mātua tīpuna kia eke panuku, kia eke Tangaroa.

Waitaha Secondary Schools’ Kapa Haka Competitions 2019.

Yasmin Sadlier and Amiria Tikao competed at the Canterbury regional kapa haka competitions, where their group won several first placings and were placed 3rd overall. The competitions were held at the Aurora Center on Saturday, August 3.

Yasmin and Amiria were part of a combined school group called Kimihia. It was made up of a combination of students from Christchurch Girls’ High School, St Andrews College, Christchurch Boys High School, Cashmere High School and Linwood College. The group is based at Linwood College and is run under the leadership and guidance of Manu Paringatai.

Kimihia was fortunate to have a team of fantastic young tutors who come from various senior kapa haka groups from throughout Canterbury. We are very thankful to their tutors for the time and energy they put into helping them reach such a high standard.

Well done to both girls for their outstanding performances on the day. The result of many hours of intensive training, dedication and a true showcase of their passion for kapa haka.
