Squash 2019

Katie Light —

It has been a very encouraging year for Squash at Christchurch Girls’ High School with a number of new players showing an interest to learn how to play Squash.

We entered two teams into the winter Secondary School Division B competition. We all were challenged and gradually got stronger with the games we played against stronger players, but the fun and team spirit was there every week.

We sent a strong team to Dunedin for the South Island Secondary Schools’ Teams event, and they all performed really well. A team then went to Tauranga for the National Secondary Schools’ Teams event. These games were a lot harder but we all performed to the best of our abilities and made the school proud of us, finishing 8th place in New Zealand. We managed to do a bit of sightseeing while in Tauranga with Ms Lawrence, who was our teacher in charge of school squash this year. Two of our players, Caitlin Millard and Petra Curd-McCullough, were our outstanding players of the year. They were recognised by being selected for the Trans Tasman Junior Secondary School team.

Katie Light received the CGHS Squash Trophy for her contribution to Squash for 2019. We would all like to say a big thank you to Ms Lawrence for taking the time to support us week in week out and being able to come with us to Tauranga; we really appreciate everything you do for us. We had a blast. Finally, as CGHS Squash continues to grow we look forward to hopefully taking two teams to Nationals in 2020!
