ZONTA SPORTS AWARDS

Robin Brown —

The Zonta Sports Awards were held on Thursday 25 October at the Hornby Workingmen’s Club. These awards are held to celebrate the top athletes in the Canterbury / West Coast region, plus the students who give back to their sport and school through officiating and organising.

CGHS had some talented sportswomen make the finals this year. They included Jess Aitken, Bella Lister, Olivia Sloan, Cass Hetherington, Sophie White, plus our 2017 Condor Sevens team.

Olivia Merry, a striker in the Vantage Blacksticks (New Zealand Women’s Hockey Team), was the guest speaker. Olivia, as a member of this team, won a gold medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and she competed in the 2018 World Cup in London. She recounted some of her experiences from being a member of the Blacksticks and the travel opportunities this had brought her. She gave everyone at the awards some some insights into the life of an elite sports person.

There were many talented athletes from the Canterbury region at this event and our CGHS finalists were among them! Results for our girls were:

· Winner in the category for "Most valued contribution to a team" was Sophie White.

· Joint winners of the category "Most outstanding team" went to our Condor Sevens 2017 team. Some of last year’s year 13’s came along to the awards to accept this award.

Congratulations to all of our nominees and finalists for these Sports Awards, especially the Sevens team and Sophie White.
