Rowing Success

Catherine McDermott —

We have been so incredibly fortunate for the rowing season to happen with no cancellations of regattas this year. The rowers worked extremely hard and have been a credit to the school.

36 rowers were selected to compete at Maadi - the national secondary school competition for rowing. After a week of heats, repecharges, quarterfinals and semifinals we ended up with 7 boats in A finals (top 8 in Aotearoa) and 5 boats in B finals (top 16 in Aotearoa).

The rowers came back with three medals which is a fantastic effort from them all.

Gold - Novice U18 Coxed Four

Frankie Leggett, Holly Smith, Alice Fissenden, Brooke Perrim and coxen - Poppy Jarman

A huge thank you to the school for allowing the rowers to stay a week prior to Maadi week for a training camp. This allowed them to stay in their covid free bubble where many other schools were hit by covid in the week prior to Maadi and during the Maadi week. We were one of very few schools who had the least amount of impact and our crews remained intact from the beginning.

We were able to cheer on our sister rowing school Epsom Girls’ Grammar and although we were in different zones and unable to host them for our annual morning tea, Linda vanden Hoek and Emma Fissenden provided a beautiful morning tea for Saturday Finals day in which Epsom were able to collect (contact free) and enjoy. Thank you to you both.

Thank you to Nina Jarman ( Rowing Captain) and Paris Sutton ( Deputy) for their work over the season leading the rowers.

Congratulations to Katie Gardner who has been selected for a NZ Junior trial. Also to ex Christchurch Girls High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora rowers Emily Bowden and Orla Fitzgerald who also have trials.

Finally a massive thank you to all the parent helpers and coaches involved in the season. We had 61 rowers in the club this season, our largest group so far. There are countless hours of hard work that goes into the six regattas down in Twizel as well as three training camps. The rowers truly appreciate all the hard work, and without this continual support we would not be able to compete.

2022 - 23 Season will begin in October - Term 4
