South Island Touch Championships

Robin Brown —

The South Island Touch Championships went ahead, with eleven girls' teams competing from throughout the South Island.

After a very weather interrupted Wednesday Super Touch competition, plus the cancelled Canterbury Championships, it was a great opportunity for the Super Touch team to head to Sheldon Park in Belfast last weekend (25/26 March) to play some touch.

A beautiful morning greeted the team and the first game against Nelson Girls’ was a chance for the team to settle and play great touch. The team won 6-2; a great start. Next up was Columba College from Dunedin, a strong team. Our players acquitted themselves well especially in the second half, however Columba showed their dominance to take the win. The last game of the day was against Avonside Girls’, which was a win for our team but a bit closer than had been expected 5-1.

Sunday morning’s first game was the last of pool play against Marlborough Girls’; this was a draw 4-4 and a fantastic game, but one Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora needed to win. Unfortunately, Marlborough headed for the semifinals, pipping Christchurch Girls' High School / Te kura o Hine Waiora on tries for and against. So, our team was in the 5-8 place section and the first game was against St Margaret’s College. A close encounter which saw St Margaret’s win 2-1.

Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora team’s final game was against Avonside Girls’ and after a much improved second chance at playing this team, Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora won comfortably to come seventh for the tournament.

A tiring weekend with some fantastic play by our team which had players from Year 9 to Year 13 playing together. Thanks to Vicki Campbell who stepped in for regular coach Bella Lister, and as well, thanks to manager Sara Bussey.

Congratulations to all players; there is lots of potential for the future for Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora touch!
