Helen O'Connor —

A Night in the Life of a Year 9

After the love you lots and the lights go out

The giggling starts and we’re up and about

Then oh no you hear the creak of a stair

Who could it be? A matron? Prepare!

Lights switch off and sheer panic sets in

You wildly scramble to your bed, heart beating

The creak of a door, the sound of footsteps

You hide underneath the duvet snuggling into the depths

Someone laughs then gets violently shshed

The door handle turns and is slowly pushed

Sweat beads gather at the thought of early mornings

Guilly's words from last night ring in your head “this is your last warning”

Then what appears round the door to everyone's surprise?

A hand holding a toothbrush followed by a girl with sheepish eyes

A weight feels lifted, the room sighs with relief

We grin at each other though still in disbelief

But the laughter starts again as the truth sets in

We haven't been caught, matrons nil, we win
