Theatresports

Abigail Rainey —

On Sunday 20th August, our courageous Senior Theatresports players took part in the annual competition organised by The Court Theatre.

In a Christchurch Girls’ High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora first, we had two teams involved across different heats: Emily McVicar, Lilly Malcolm, Rata Shaw, Ellie Busfield and Holly Ross in the first and Kate Bennett, Bee Sutcliffe, Savreet Malhi and Erin Darton in the second.

As always, the teams performed exceptionally and were wonderful ambassadors for our kura.  In the blind rounds, one of the teams was given the challenge of creating a shared story in a variety of genres while the other team created a ‘He said, she said’ scene.

This complex game involves the players giving stage directions to each other while attempting to build an engaging story. Both teams rose to the challenges of these games admirably, creating lots of laughter for the audience in the process. The teams also had the opportunity to choose a variety of games in the subsequent rounds, including a ‘New Choice’ which forces the team to take the scene in an entirely different direction and ‘Meanwhile’ where two seemingly unrelated scenes come together with hilarious results.

There were plenty of memorable moments from two cell-mates tattooing each other, an enthusiastic model and their photographer, aliens fighting back against human colonization to a motif of red, juicy apples!

Unfortunately, our teams missed out on a place in the final, but both teams can be enormously proud of their efforts. The enthusiasm, energy, and talent of these young people is amazing. However, what impressed us most was our students’ composure under pressure, their obvious passion for Theatresports and their aroha for each other.

 Ka rawe tō mahi teams!
