The Head Laboratory Assistant is responsible for appointing senior students to take charge of a laboratory each.

These senior students each had a small team of reliable junior laboratory assistants who were responsible for keeping the laboratories tidy, re-labelling grey trays and replenishing supplies under the direction of the Science Technician. Duties are carried out on a roster (one day a week) at lunchtime. Laboratory assistants received training and then a badge after a short trial period. Meetings are held monthly. Laboratory inspections were carried out once a term and prizes awarded for the tidiest and most improved laboratories. The assistance of this large and valuable group was much appreciated by both Science staff and students.
