Win in the Gillette Venus Cup Qualifiers

Robin Brown, Head of Sport —

On Friday last week, the CGHS 1st XI cricket team played Rangi Ruru in the final of the Gillette Venus Cup qualifiers.

We were extremely successful, winning by a total of 80 runs. We scored 154 runs off our 20 overs with Abby McKissock top-scoring with 38 off 28 balls. Estella Wallace 34 off 25 balls and Joey Hull 24 off 23 balls, both played crucial supporting roles. In the second innings, Rangi Ruru got off to a good start with Harriet Graham scoring 35 off 23 balls, but Maise Bennie-Steel picked up 2 wickets in 2 balls bringing us right back into the game, finishing with bowling figures of 2/17 off 2 overs. After this breakthrough the wickets began to fall, with the team taking 10 wickets for 32 runs. Kate Hastings was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/3 off 1.4 overs, Lexi Rouse also picked up 2 wickets.

A huge thank you to Kat Keenan for coaching the team.

The team will now compete at the Gillette Venus Secondary Schools nationals in Term 4 which we are very excited for and hope to defend our 2021 national title.
