Debating

Lily Marris and Paige Chong —

The CGHS debating club in 2019 was made up of 12 talented girls from Year 9 to Year 13.

These girls made four teams which competed in the Canterbury Schools’ Debating Council’s fortnightly inter-school competition. All four teams displayed an excellent set of public speaking and case-building skills, leading to success in many of their debates.

Our Year 9 Novice team, comprised of Estella Velenski, Kayla Pringle and Holly Hance placed second in the Junior Novice Round, after a tough final against the Cashmere Novice 1 Team. This is an amazing achievement and we are very proud of how much their skills have advanced since the beginning of the year!

Five of our senior debaters ran the Debating Club, prepping the juniors for their upcoming debates, building on rhetorical speaking skills and forming substantive arguments. In Debating Club, we also practised informal debates with some equally skilled casual debaters at CGHS.

A huge thank you to Mrs Dyne, Dr Williamson and Mrs Collingwood for their help during the year, attending and supervising debates, as well as helping us put our ideas into practice. We look forward to continuing the club and developing our debating skills further in 2020. -
