A Winning Weekend: Junior Volleyball Teams Shine in Canterbury
Exciting news from the Canterbury Junior Volleyball Tournament! Our school proudly sent its Junior A and Junior B teams, and what a weekend it was.
With 55 teams in the mix, our players got a taste of competition, enjoying eight games against various schools. Big shout-out to the caregivers who came out to cheer – your support means the world. A special thanks to our Senior players, Lily, Jo, Helen, Alice and Amelie who had a break from studying hard for their senior exams to come out and help coach and support Mr Norton and myself. You displayed all of the values that we want our younger players to see.
Our teams didn't just play; they learned and progressed, demonstrating true sportsmanship.
Special kudos to the Junior A team, clinching 3rd place overall. Well done to every player – your effort shows!
Let's highlight Mischa Laulala and Zara Hunter, both making the tournament team. Their standout performances make us doubly proud.
But the action doesn't stop there. Next week, our Junior A and Junior B teams are off to Dunedin for the South Island Championships. Brace yourselves – 78 teams, including 4 from Australia, will be in the mix. We're ready for the challenge!

Volleyball New Zealand recently confirmed the squads of players targeting 2024 events in the Junior Women’s international pathway. With over 15000 girls playing high school volleyball in NZ gaining representation in nationals squads is a truly remarkable achievement.
Following camps and trials held earlier in 2023, a total of 48 players have been named across two wider squads in preparation for events set to take place in 2024.
Junior Women’s Head Coach Andrew Kilham reflected a process which saw the standard high on the court but also in the approach taken by athletes off the court.
“The level of competition for places in our squad was impressive. The athletes worked hard to perform their roles to the best of their ability and there was a real level of intensity,” Kilham said.
The Asian Volleyball Championship squad of 12 athletes and four non-travelling reserves will be named after a camp set for Christchurch in April.
The Development Teams targeting the Australian Junior Championships are also to be finalised for action in mid-2024 following their camp opportunity slated for Palmerston North in March.
