The Pauline Grogan Scholarship

This award is presented by the Zonta Club of Christchurch North in honour of Mrs Pauline Grogan who was the Head of Learning Enhancement at Christchurch Girls’ High School.

Pauline dedicated much of her teaching career to supporting students of diverse talents and challenges to achieve at the best of their potential. The recipient of this award will either have been part of the Learning Enhancement programme or have had access to Special Assessment Conditions. The award will assist the student in their next career or study beyond school. They will be a student who exemplifies the school values, who persists in the face of challenge, and who has worked hard to maximise her talents despite obstacles.

The Howell Travelling Scholarship

The Edwin Howell Travelling Scholarship in Literature was established in memory of her husband Dr Brenda Blackburn who attended Christchurch Girls’ High School from 1933 – 1937.

The best Year 13 students who have a background of participation in the School’s literature competitions are nominated for the Scholarship and sit a viva voce examination conducted by a representative of the English Department of Canterbury University and a member of the school’s English Department.

The Ballantynes Trophy

The Ballantyne’s trophy for leadership for Year 11 students who have most worthily upheld the traditions of the school and been fully involved in the wider life of the school.

Miss Tyndall Memorial Prize

The Miss Tyndall Memorial prize for the Year 12 student who has most worthily upheld the tradition of the school in scholarship, leadership and sport and extra-curricular activities.

The Olive Calloway special prize for service by a senior student

Mrs June Burns has donated a prize in memory of her aunt, Miss Olive Calloway, who was a student of our school from 1926-1930.  Olive Calloway worked voluntarily for many years in the community.  The prize is to recognise service by a senior student.

The Joan Bull Memorial Award

This prize is awarded to a Year 13 student who has been a loyal and stalwart member of the school and who will be continuing her education in the tertiary field.

The Pam Neill Memorial Award for Community Service

Awarded for outstanding self-motivated achievement within the community.

The Hugh McDougall Rankin Education Trust Award

The late Hugh McDougall Rankin established this trust to support students of the Sciences in furthering their education to contribute to the technological wealth of New Zealand.

The Al-Ani Memorial Prize 

This prize has been donated in memory of Dr Al-Ani, the father of 3 former students.  Dr Al-Ani lost his life in the February 2011 earthquake. It is awarded to the Year 13 student who has achieved highly in the field of science, who has consistently displayed positive citizenship and is undertaking tertiary study in the biomedical area.


The Al-Ani Memorial Prize for 2023 goes to: Lucy Barns


The Catherine Peters Memorial Prize for Enthusiasm

(for contributing positively to the school community by her enthusiastic attitude)


This prize has been donated by the family of Catherine Peters, a former and much-loved student of the school, who died in a tragic accident shortly after leaving the school.

Shanti Niranjan Education Award

The award is to acknowledge students who have demonstrated determination, perseverance and courage during their time at school.

The 2023 recipient of the Shanti Niranjan Education Scholarship is: Munashe Webeck


The Prime Minister’s Vocational Excellence Award

This award is to celebrate the achievement of secondary students enrolled in vocational programmes. Vocational education helps students develop skills, knowledge and attributes that will help them in their future careers.

In 2023, this award goes to:  Eve Nimmo

Judith Ann Spooner Award 

This award is for a student who, in Year 13, have most worthily upheld the traditions of Christchurch Girls' High School in academic excellence and leadership in the school community

This award is for a Year 13 student who in some way made a significant contribution to the life of our school.

The Peggy Storrar Award for Academic Excellence

This award is for students who have shown overall Excellence across all of their subjects.


We have two recipients this year: Holly Hance and Alexandria Sidwell


The William and Ina Cartwright Prize for Academic Excellence

The 2023 recipient excelled by being in the top 5 students in Painting, Media, Health and History. This year it is awarded to:  Trinity Mann

MĀORI AND PASIFIKA AWARDS


The first award is our premier award to recognize leadership in a Maori student.

The Mana Wahine Mana Matauraka – Leadership in Senior Māori Prize goes to:

The Matai Prize for the Top Year 13 Pasifika student 


The 2023 recipient of this award is: Gisele McAllister


Ka Hāro te Manu the prize for the Top Year 13 Māori student. The name of this award means 'the bird soars', a fitting name indeed for our high-flying top Māori student who has contributed to the heights for the future generations of aspiring Māori. 


The recipient of this award is: Ngarita MacKenzie 

The Proxime Accessit


This award goes to two students.

The first has demonstrated an excellent work ethic throughout her time at school. She achieved both NCEA Levels 1 and 2 and numerous individual subjects endorsed with Excellence and has also been the recipient of other academic awards throughout her time at Christchurch Girls’ High School - Te kura o Hine Waiora. 

She has achieved colours for both Academic and Service. 

In 2023 she placed highly in Physics, Chemistry, Painting, Printing and Digital Technology, which she had to take through Te Kura. She has been a part of the Prefect team with an oversight of the school Academic committee.  

Our first Proxime Accesserunt to the Dux for 2023 is:

Our second Proxime Accesserunt, also has shown us the value of perseverance, focus and the power of a strong work ethic. It is through these traits that she has not only excelled academically but has also made a positive impact to the wider community.

This student gained Academic colours for both level 1 and Level 2, as well as full Service colours. In previous years, she has been awarded prizes in Mathematics, and has continued this trend by placing highly in Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, alongside her 2023 placing of a 1st in Physics and a 1st in Economics.

Dux of the School

The Dux, our top academic award, has consistently demonstrated an unparalleled work ethic, consistently setting the bar for academic achievement. In Addition to being our Dux this is a role model who has set a high standard of achievement in all areas and has shown herself to be of strong character. We look forward to seeing where their promising future takes them.

She achieved both NCEA Levels 1 and Level 2 endorsed with Excellence, numerous individual subjects also endorsed with Excellence and has been the recipient of a multitude of academic awards during her time at our school. 

This year's recipient was in our Netball B team, has gained full colours for service as well as for Academic. She has been the schools Head Laboratory assistant, gained a 1st in both French and Chemistry, a Second in Calculus, a second in Biology and a second in Physics. Her academic excellence in the Science field saw her achieve both the Hugh McDougall Rankin Education Trust Award and the Al-Ani Memorial Prize.
