Tourism - Tāpoi - Level 2

Calling all explorers! Discover the world's wonders, diverse cultures, sustainable tourism and what is on your front doorstep. Come and study Tourism.

Qualification: Gain credits towards NCEA Level 2 and credits towards the National Certificate in Tourism. This is a Unit Standards Course.

Entry requirements: Open entry.

Content/Skills: This course prepares ākonga to work in a variety of roles in the tourism industry and covers 5 Unit Standards; Tourist Characteristics, Impacts of Tourism on the Physical Environment, Destination New Zealand, World Tourist Destinations and Personal Presentation.  Ākonga will learn the skills and knowledge to give them an insight into the tourism industry. This is also a useful subject for ākonga who want to travel or are trying to manage a busy workload due to work and assessment being carried out during class time.

Course Costs: Please be aware that this course has (optional) associated costs. The course costs are approximately $150 which will cover field trip costs for a one day trip to Akaroa, Methven Hot pools and Staveley Ice Rink / Mt Hutt Ski Day. There will also be various outings around Christchurch during the tourism class time slot.

Assessment

5 Internal Unit Standards worth 17 Credits in total.

Where does it lead? Ākonga are working towards meeting the requirements of the National Certificate in Tourism. Ākonga who want to complete more standards towards the National Certificate should speak to the Careers Adviser to discuss the options available. From here ākonga may go onto tertiary study in Tourism at Lincoln University, New Zealand School of Tourism, Canterbury University, Queenstown Resort College and other similar institutions. Other ākonga may seek career opportunities directly in the tourism industry.
