Geography/Mātai Matawhenua -Level 1

CGHS —

In Geography we learn about interesting places all around NZ and the world. We learn about what these places are like and what is going on there.

The Level 1 course introduces ākonga to this subject and the foundational skills and concepts used throughout all levels of Geography.

Topics

Amazing Places

Learn to look at the world from a geographical viewpoint as you learn about amazing places places such as Dubai in the Middle East, Aoraki/ Mt Cook in New Zealand as well as a place of your choice. What makes these places so special and what are the issues going on there? A highlight of this topic is a 3 day field trip to Aoraki/Mt Cook*.

Geographic Issues and Challenges

Investigate important geographic issues and challenges facing the world and New Zealand today. Issues such as human rights, gender equality, child labour and climate change. Find out where in the world these things are occurring, why it happens there, how people are impacted and learn to understand different viewpoints. Case studies include Child Labour in Africa, South America and Asia as well as current NZ and and Pacific issues.

Natures power

The world is constantly being reminded of the power and forces of nature. As a country NZ is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire but is also an Island nation on the Roaring 40's, a line of latitude that brings all kinds of weather. Learn how the natural world works and how it impacts us. Case studies focus on Earthquakes, Tsunami's and Volcanic eruptions in NZ, Tonga, Hawaii, and Asia. 

This topic includes a local fieldtrip.

Entry requirements: Open entry

Assessment: 

2 Internal Assessments worth 10 credits. These assessments can be worked on in class and at home.

1 External Achievement Standards worth 5 credits

Where does it lead? 

The skills and knowledge learnt in Geography can lead to a diverse range of careers in; media, environmental science and management, politics, agriculture, urban planning, law, engineering, hydrology, police, aid and development, resource and hazard management, health, tourism, GIS, geology, meteorology, surveying and landscape design.
