South Island Junior Korfball Tournament

Robin Brown —

Last weekend the Christchurch Girls’ High School/ Te Kura o Hine Waiora Junior A Korfball team competed in the Mixx South Island Junior Tournament at MainPower Indoor Centre in Rangiora.

The team had had one training due to the tournament being held so early in the term, however a keen group of Year 9 and 10 students were looking forward to a weekend of Korfball. Korfball, officially is played with boys and girls however our team were confident to play against the boys in the teams they faced.

In the initial pool play the team were quite competitive, with the following results:

  • versus Hillmorton High School team 3 – Christchurch Girls’ High School/ Te Kura o Hine Waiora 6, Hillmorton 6
  • versus Rangiora High team 2 – Christchurch Girls’ High School/ Te Kura o Hine Waiora 10, Rangiora 4
  • versus Cashmere High School team 3 – Christchurch Girls’ High School/ Te Kura o Hine Waiora 2, Cashmere 4

The team finished second in the pool which meant they were then in the top 8 pool. This proved abit more challenging with some great opposing teams. Results:

  • versus St Margaret’s/Christchurch Boys’ – Christchurch Girls’ High School/ Te Kura o Hine Waiora 1, St Margs/CBHS 21
  • versus Rangiora High team 1 – Christchurch Girls’ High School/ Te Kura o Hine Waiora 2, Rangiora 22
  • Finally for the 7/8 play off game versus Hillmorton team 3 – Christchurch Girls’ High School/ Te Kura o Hine Waiora 2, Hillmorton 5 – and eighth place for Christchurch Girls’ High School/ Te Kura o Hine Waiora.

A fantastic effort from our team; well done to all players as in some games they only had one sub.  A big thank you to Gabi Newell-Haberfield who was the student coach over the weekend.
