International Future Problem Solving Competition

Simon Kersten, Year 9 Dean —

Sarah Cox, Isabella Donald, Evelyn King and Sylvie King took part in the FPSPI competition last week.

Future Problem Solving is an international competition where students are challenged to use creative thinking skills to develop innovative solutions to global challenges. Sarah Cox, Isabella Donald, Evelyn King and Sylvie King (all CGHS Year 9 students) earned their place on two New Zealand teams while attending Selwyn house last year.

Originally, they were going to be in Massachusetts this month for the international finals competition however this was obviously cancelled due to Covid-19. This would have been an incredible opportunity to meet with great minds across the world in a new environment. Despite the setback, the girls took this disappointment in their stride and competed admirably in an online version of the competition.

The Community Problem Solving Team (including Sarah Cox and Isabella Donald) competed last Tuesday and impressed with their maturity and positive attitude during a pretty strenuous online interview about their project. Their coach, Greg Pearce, was really proud of their huge efforts to complete their project during the lockdown in really trying circumstances.

The Global Issues Team competed last Friday (Evelyn and Sylvie King) and did such a great job. The topic was terraforming and involved some incredibly complicated science. They were amazing, putting in hours of work throughout the lockdown and their holidays. FPS sessions via google meetings were a challenge but they totally rose to it. I was so proud of them.

They did themselves and the school very proud!
