Commerce/Tauhokohoko - Level 1

CGHS —

Commerce has replaced Accounting and Economics in Year 11.

Qualification: NCEA Level 1

Entry requirements: None.

Content/Skills: Changes to NCEA have meant that this new subject has been created to replace what used to be taught in Year 11 as Accounting and Economics. Accounting and Economics will still be taught as separate subjects in Years 12 and 13.

In Commerce you will learn the knowledge, skills and values that will enable you to achieve to a very high level in Accounting, Economics and Business in the senior school, at university, and in life. You will learn how different cultures and values affect the decision consumers make and the pūtake (goals) of businesses and community groups; how financial and non-financial information is used to make decisions; how whanau and organisations rely on each other and how decisions by one group can impact on others; and how kaitiakitanga (looking after resources), innovation, enterprise and tauhokohoko (trade & exchange) enable society to thrive. This is a very important foundation course where you will develop the analytical skills and vocabulary that are essential for further study in these subjects.

Field Trips: A free trip to Spagalimis (though you can choose to buy your lunch). There may be another trip also.

Course Costs: Please be aware that this course may have associated costs. By selecting this course you may be requested to make contributions connected to its delivery. These costs would likely be $25.00 for workbook, although because this is a new course we are unsure if a suitable workbook will be available.

Assessment:

As with all subjects in Year 11, we will assess 3 standards worth 5 credits each in this course.

2 Internal Achievement Standards (10 Credits).

1 External Achievement Standard (5 Credits)

For further information see Mr Blyth, Mrs Boyd, Ms James or Miss Price.

Where does it lead? There is a wide range of careers open to students of commerce. These include Accounting, Economics, Financial Planning, Human Resource Management, Information Systems, International Business, Importing and Exporting, Insurance, Management, Marketing, Operations and Supply Chain Management, Business Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Taxation, Tourism, Event Management, Insurance and more.

Completing a commerce degree (B.Com) or diploma is a great pathway into any of these careers, and in your first year of tertiary study you will have to complete an accounting and an economics paper. By studying Commerce in Year 11, followed by Economics and/or Accounting in Years 12 and 13, we will ensure you are extremely well prepared to succeed when you leave school.

Proven success
