Miles Toyota Cup Final

CGHS Publication —

The rain held off as the Miles Toyota Cup final kicked off at Ngā Puna Wai on Wednesday, with stands full of supporters from both schools.

Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora were hot favourites having beaten Avonside in round robin play and they started like that scoring two tries in the first 10 minutes. Half back Rylee Munro scored the first and Kelera Qalivutu the second. After that it was all Avonside as they played out of their skin for 15 minutes, putting immense pressure on the Girls' High team by scoring two tries who then fought back scoring 2 tries to go into half time with a 26-12 lead.

Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora started the second half by putting together a well constructed try to Harriet Cochrane. The pressure was now on Avonside and Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora kept piling it on, running in another 6 tries leaving the final score 69-17.

The team, which was well led by captain Eliza Dalzell and vice captain Rylee Munro, featured two Year 9's in Charley Campbell and Alice Geary. Others to stand out were backs Harriet Cochrane and Kelera Qalivutu and in the forwards Celia MacPherson and off the bench Fes Taiulu.

The First XV now head to Dunedin on 27 August to play the winners of the Highlanders region for a spot at the Nationals Top 4 competition.
