31st Zonta Sports Awards

Robin Brown —

The Zonta Sports Awards are held annually and celebrate secondary school sports within Canterbury. Finalists, individuals and teams, in a number of different categories, are invited to attend the awards dinner where the winners are announced.

Last night Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora had several teams and individuals attend the event hosted by the Zonta Club of Christchurch South. Tessa Morrison, Canterbury Wildcats basketballer and member of the inaugural Tauihi Women’s Basketball league was the guest speaker. Tessa was a senior student at our school some years ago and is now an advocate for equality and fairness in sport and she uses sport to connect with young people. Her speech highlighted her pathway in her sport since leaving school.

Our finalists were:

The award for the most valued contribution to a team by a young sports woman:

Reed McHugh – Aerobics

The award for the most outstanding individual achievement by a young sportswoman specialising in one sport:

Reed McHugh (main photo) was the winner of her category for her personal achievements in aerobics but, more importantly, for enabling others to participate successfully for our school. Reed has put in many hours of coaching and organising this year.

The 1st XV Rugby team and the 1st XI Hockey team were both awarded highly commended certificates in the outstanding teams category.

Congratulations to all our students who attended the Awards.
