Cycling New Zealand South Island Schools' Championships

Jordy Taylor, Cycling Captain —

Over the 6th and 7th of July the CGHS cycling team competed at the Cycling New Zealand South Island Schools Championships at Ruapuna Raceway where we had a number of successes.

Over this bitter weekend, Saturday consisted of an individual time trial and a team time trial where Amye Kellow (U16) and Brooke Keown (U15) both placed 2nd in the U15 and U16 girls' individual time trial.

Shortly after this the girls warmed up again and prepared themselves with hopes of more medals in the team time trial. In the U16 team time trial we managed to claim a very close second to Verdon college, this team consisted of Paris Carroll, Claudia Wright, Orla Fitzgerald and Brooke Keown

Later on in the afternoon the U20 team, consisting of Amye Kellow, Caitlin Jamieson, Dannielle McLaughlin, Harriet Rowse and Meg Barnes, battled for the title Girls’ High has held for the past few years. Successfully they managed to place second in this event against our biggest long-time rival, Villa Maria College.

As day one came to an end the girls reflected on their successes and began to prepare for the following day, which consisted of road races requiring the girls to be tactical throughout their race. In this event Brooke Keown won the U15 girls 15km road race and Amye kellow managed to grab hold of her third medal over the weekend placing 2nd in the U16 girls 20.6km road race.

The U20 girls fought hard in their road race but unfortunately did not come away with a medal but still held their heads high whilst looking forward to the upcoming Blenheim tour this coming August.

Overall the girls had an exceptional weekend of racing and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Girls’ High cycling team for the remaining of the 2019 season and further future.
