Young Farmers 2019

Milly Henderson, and Sam Harmer —

Young Farmers this year was run by Milly Henderson and Sam Harmer.

This year has been action-packed and has had some very exciting events.

We started the year with a trip to the New Zealand Merino Company Headquarters, followed by many of our girls completing in the annual TeenAg competition, which was a fun day for everyone.

Throughout the year, many of our senior girls completed the Leadership Pathway Program that is run by Young Farmers to further our leadership, organisation and understanding of the Agri sector and running of a club like Young Farmers. Sam and Milly were both fortunate to be apart of a Food and Fibre leaders forum this year which took place in Methven over a couple of days, in which we listened to many inspiring speakers who are making advances and huge leaps for the sector. We also collated ideas on the future of Canterbury agriculture, the problems we may face in the future and how to overcome them. This was a very exciting and interesting trip, that we both took a lot away from and got to meet some other like-minded people from all over Canterbury.

Many girls also attended the local field days in Kirwee, which was very exciting and interesting to have a look at the new technology and processes evolving in the sector. One of our members took part in Raising the Standards camp which went over a few days for teenagers interested in the sector. We also had some very interesting and ground-breaking developments. One of our fellow members, Alex Goldie, successfully got Agriculture into our school curriculum as a subject option in Level 1 for 2020, which is very impressive, as we are the first girls' school in Christchurch to ever have this available as a subject!

This year has been going extremely fast and we wish we could have got more done, as we had many other exciting ideas in the pipeline, but we have really enjoyed our role as leaders, and are very excited and looking forward to what the girls will be achieving next year.  We can’t wait to see the club thrive.  Also, a big thank you very much to Miss Caird for your help this year.
