South Island Rugby Final

Sophie Yarham —

On Saturday19 August the Christchurch Girls’ High School /Te Kura o Hine Waiora 1st XV rugby team took on Southland Girls’ High School in the South Island girls rugby final.

Playing at Christchurch Boys’ High School gave our girls the home team advantage as they took the number one field in the nail-biting clash. This game was a must-need win for our undefeated Christchurch Girls’ High School /Te Kura o Hine Waiora 1st XV side if they wanted to continue their 2023 rugby season, with the winner continuing to the Top 4 competition in early September.

With the 1st XV squad being named a few weeks before this game, the girls have been putting in the mahi collectively in the lead up to this match. On Saturday morning the excitement was high in the changing sheds as the players started their game prep. Taking the energy from our warm-up and putting it onto the field enabled the girls to take the lead 15-0 at half-time.

Early in the second half the game needed to be moved to a different field due to an injury to a Southland Girls’ player (she is thankfully okay). This didn’t slow down the drive and effort the girls had, as they quickly adapted to this change. The second half tested the grit and determination within everyone, as Southland supplied the pressure by putting 12 points onto the board. Our girls did not disappoint, taking the win over Southland Girls' with a final score of 27-12.

We were amazed by the number of people and familiar faces who showed up to tautoko our 1st XV side last weekend. Our passionate supporters and generous sponsors have been a big part of our journey this year. The Christchurch Girls High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora 1st XV team has now qualified to participate in the Top 4 competition where they will play off for the national title.

We are extremely proud of this achievement, and we can’t wait for what’s ahead.
