Creative NZ Spoken Word Poetry Competition

Maria Lemalie —

On Tuesday evening our team of Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora Poets competed at the Creative NZ Spoken Word Poetry Competition, which was held at "The Piano" on Armagh Street.

'WORD - The Front Line' is an inter-high school spoken word poetry competition, bringing together teams of young people from across Christchurch to share their stories in an explosion of youth expression.

It is a poetry slam with the purpose of engaging and growing the potential of our future leaders. It is the only creative battlefield of its kind, equipping young people with poetry prowess and leadership principles for an opportunity to battle for themselves and the challenges that their generation face.

Our Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora team won the Canterbury title, with stiff competition from Cashmere High School and Papanui. The team will travel to Auckland for the National Competition in the near future. The students have been working towards this event for about a month now in their lunch times, weekends and after school.

The Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora team consists of:

  • Hattie Rouch (9RIN)
  • Eseta Qalivutu (9MOC)
  • Micahlei Lavea-Timo (9PHC)
  • Haddassah Lavea-Timo (10 AIGA)
  • Sophia Smith (12 Whanau)

Their coach was Feunuivao Lavea, a well known NZ Slam Poet and a parent at our Kura.

Huge mihi to the staff who were able to attend.
